Overall Review

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this series, seeing as it's the kind of books that I do everything in my power to avoid. The "girl meets boy, changes her life for boy, they fall in love, get married and live happily ever after" type book. Typically, I'll put down books if they follow this general plot, but I couldn't ignore all the positive reviews. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that I couldn't put the book down and read all 5 books in a week! I loved the series and am sad that there are no more books to come. I am however hoping that a movie will be coming along soon. I'm hoping that by the time a movie version of The Heir comes along, I'll be able to audition for Eadlyn. (Who I wish with every bone in my body to be!)

However, it is my absolute hate for ALL things romance that causes me to give the series four stars instead of five. I did love this book though and think all teenagers or others that love YA should read it. The writing was good, and most of the characters seemed relatable. Personally, I relate most to Eadlyn, a strong, independent, caring girl in line for the throne, that believes that men will slow her down or distract her from her duty. If you're looking for a book to read and you just can't decide, the Selection series should definitely be on your radar. No matter what it seems, this is not your average romance novel with girly girls who'll give up their life for someone they just met. (For goodness sake the first time America and Maxon meet America yells at him.) I wish I could be more like the strong independent, and brave women in this story. To be honest, I cried multiple times PER book, an impressive feat seeing as the only other book I've cried about is Allegiant.

 Individual Ratings
*Spoilers ahead!! Read at your own risk.*
The Selection: ★
  • Sturdy character development
  • Relatable characters
  • Interesting and unique plot
The Elite:
  • Interesting plot
  • Annoying love triangle *cue eye roll*
  • (Mostly) Characters stay true to themselves
The One:
  • Brave, independent heroine
  • America stops being STUPID (Seriously America get a grip!)
  • Shows the consequences of rebel attacks through main character deaths (I know it's sad, but do you want a Breaking Dawn situation where there's a lead up to a big battle only to end it with a handshake? Huh, HUH????)
The Heir:
  • Shows that women can lead the country too (Go Eadlyn!!)
  • Displays that no matter how good the cause, people won't change if they don't want to
  • Eadlyn is a strong independent woman who doesn't need a man!
  • (Eadlyn in general because she's my favorite character and I wish she was real because I would no doubt 150% be BFFs with her!!)
The Crown:
  • True love is a force to be reckoned with (EW! Why must all good characters fall in love?!)
  • Even the "best" people, can have ulterior motives (I'm looking at you Marid!)
  • Some rules are made to be broken

Wonderland: Classic Fairytale with a Sci-Fi Spin

by Robert McKay

  •  Book one of the Intergalactic Fairy Tales series
  • Science Fiction, Coming of Age
  • Includes violence and mild humor.
  • Published by McKay Manor August 20, 2015
  • 13-25 interest level

All Alice wants to be in life is a pirate. She wants to do what she wants, when she wants with no one to tell her otherwise. One night after sneaking out, Alice finds the perfect opportunity, a talking space ship. She
gets on, claiming it as her own, and rides to Wonderland. However, Wonderland isn't all smiles, it's mildly inappropriate people lose their head for disagreeing with the queen, and animals can talk, which isn't always a good thing. On her adventure, Alice makes new friends, some new enemies, and learns many valuable lessons. How far will Alice go for an adventure?

"Robert McKay is a clever nerd, who feels uncomfortable being called such. He believes in the Oxford comma, puns, and true love. Stories that wrap all of these things together, along with some outer space adventure, make his heart go pitter-patter and his days a whole lot brighter. When he’s not writing, he’s probably reading, but if he’s not doing either of those things, he may be found bowling, playing tabletop games, or researching how much it costs to rent a space shuttle."-Robert McKay

I believe that the story and all it's assets were very well written. My favorite part was Alice, as almost anyone can relate to her. Even if you haven't accidentally gone to another planet, you've probably gone against your parents just out of spite. Another thing I like is how everything seems realistic. The setting is well described, the characters are complete, and the story is unique. McKay provides a realistic story, including a main character with quirks and flaws.

Wonderland also features a unique twist on a classic story. Ever since I read Cinder I've loved fairy-tale retellings, and this one didn't disappoint. I recommend Wonderland to any fans of Cinder ages 13-25. Also, if you like space adventures, then this is the book for you. In the end, I loved everything about Wonderland and can't wait for Beauty and the Fleet, the next book in the Intergalactic Fairy Tales series.

The Blood of Olympus

The awesome Heroes of Olympus series has ended and I am sad to see it go. Blood of Olympus, the last book, was published October 7, 2014.

I loved this book Riordan tied up all the loose ends very neatly. He also didn't kill off as many characters as he could have, which masked me happy. It all ended the same way as it started and he made sure to end the series well. I'm glad he didn't just get lazy on the last book and make it sloppy. He stayed true to his fans and made sure the series ended well. This is why I give the book 5 stars.
"Though the Greek and Roman crew-members of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they're stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two
demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.

The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it "might" be able to stop a war between the two camps.

The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over."-goodreads.com

I recommend this book to anyone ages 11-16 that like Greek and Roman mythology. Anybody above the age of 16 might think the book is stupid and anybody below 11 might get scared or confused. Before reading this book try read the first four books, The Lost Hero, The Son of Neptune, The Mark of Athena, and The House of Hades. Also, to be clearer about what is going on in the series, read the Percy Jackson series that this series was based off of.

Lindsay Versus the Marauders

Lindsay Versus the Marauders by J.S. Frankel, published June 26, 2014, was given to me for free by J.S. Frankel in exchange for an honest review.

Lindsay Fleming has been an outcast since she came out to her all of her friends about liking girls. But one night, after the most humiliating moment of her life, it all changes. She meets mysterious Jo and they go on a mission to regain what belongs to Jo's planet. As they travel through the universe tracking down Turkel, an evil thief, will they become friends or will Jo continue to shut everybody out? Join Lindsay and Jo as the travel the universe to find out.

What I  Did Like:

Jo, Lindsay, The Plot, Originality

What I Didn't Like:

Insta-Love, Turkel, The Writing

Insta-Love:

I feel the characters were not given enough time to bond they just fell in love. There wasn't any growth or anything just BAM they're dating. I feel they could have been a good couple over time but the insta-love was one the reasons I gave it 3 stars instead of 5.

Jo:

Jo is a tense, uptight girl fighting to gain back the three pieces of the jewel that powers Jo's planet in exchange for her people's forgiveness. She is mysterious and has closed everybody out due to the fact she has never been loved.

Linsday:

Lindsay is a young women faced with the challenge of being different from everybody else. She is unique but traumatized because she thinks liking girls is the reason her mother died.

Originality:

Frankel created an intense and unique novel with realistic characters. They treat most situations as actual adults would.

The Plot:

I feel that the storyline holds the reader's attention and once you start reading, you can't stop. The only problem was that the plot dragged on a little bit, while I prefer fast-paced books.

Turkel(the bad guy):

Turkel is a good main villain, but he had the potential to be more. I would like to know what went wrong and caused him to be a pirate. What's his background, was he abused, did his parent's not care about him? This information like this would make him a better villain.

And Last but Not Least:

The Writing:

I feel like the writing really dragged the story down. Frankel wrote the word "said" a lot instead of more descriptive words like exclaimed or wondered. Also he could have described more which really would have improved the story. This is a big reason that this book got 3/5 stars, not 5/5.

About the Author:

"J.S. Frankel was born in Toronto, Canada, many moons ago and managed to scrape through high school and university, earning a BA in English Literature and leaving no book unopened during his time at the University of Toronto. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Japan in order to teach English to the hapless residents of whichever city he happened to be living at the time.

In 1997, he married the charming Akiko Koike and their union produced two rather interesting children. Frankel and his family make their home in Osaka where he teaches during the day and attempts to write YA fiction at night." - Goodreads.com.

Tanglewreck

Tanglewreck, by Jeanette Winterson, was first published January 1, 2006 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens.

Time tornadoes are sweeping people away and placing them in different times. Strange people from the seventeenth century are living underground. It's up to Silver to find the Timekeeper and restore time to it's natural state. She needs the help of Gabriel to find and repair the Timekeeper. If you want to see if they restore time and save the world buy the book at Amazon.com.

Jeanette Winterson was born on August 27, 1959 in Manchester, England, but then adopted and brought up in the nearby mill-town Accrington. Her adopted family was a part of the working class and so Jeanette was not encouraged to be smart or read. The family only owned six books and two of them were the Bible and Cruden’s Complete Concordance to the Old and New Testaments. The only reading approved of was the Bible. Schooling was very few, but she did get herself into a girl's grammar school and from there she read English at Oxford University. This was a difficult transition because she moved out at sixteen after falling in love with another girl. She now divides her time between Oxfordshire and London where she owns a greengrocer's market.  She is now married to Susie Orbach.

I think the book was very interesting and detailed. The descriptive words and vivid detail gave it a more lively feel. I like how Silver seems to grow up throughout the book, from a shy little girl to a strong sure young woman. I am on my way to read The Battle of the Sun, also by Jeanette Winterson.

I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in science fiction, time travel, or just fiction. For more books like this check out The Battle of the Sun by Jeanette Winterson. You can find more books by Jeanette Winterson at Jeanettewinterson.com

The Dopple Ganger Chronicles: The First Escape

The Dopple Ganger Chronicles: The First Escape by G.P Taylor, published in 2008 by Markosia Enterprises, LTD, begins at Isambard Dunstan's School for Wayward Children. Saskia's side of the story mostly takes place in Spaniards House, a big grand house on the top of Parliament Hill. Sadie's side of the story is constantly moving from Isambard Dunstan's School for Wayward Children to Hampstead to Spaniards House.

Mischievous twin sisters Sadie and Saskia Dopple think they rule Isambard Dunstan's School for Wayward Children and everyone else does too. When somebody adopts only Saskia, Sadie says she still rules even if  both girls are not together. Right before Saskia gets in the car Sadie makes a promise that she will find Saskia and they will be together. Throughout the story it switches between Sadie and Erik's adventure and Saskia's adventure.

The Main characters are Sadie and Saskia Dopple, who are completely identical except for Sadie has a yellow left eye and a blue right eye while Saskia has a blue left eye and a yellow right eye. The only other difference is Sadie thinks before she speaks making her the quieter yet more dangerous one.
Page 164-5

The Dopple Ganger Chronicles are known for their interesting mixture of comic, picture book and chapter book all smashed together between the covers. This structure makes for an interesting reads. Look at the picture to the left and see the comic strip on one page and picture book on the other.

In Great Britain G.P. Taylor is being called "The new C.S. Lewis" and "Hotter than Potter". In 2004 his first novel, Shadowmancer, reached #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers. His novels have been translated into several different languages all over the world. His other books include Shadowmancer, Wormwood, The Shadowmancer Returns: The Curse of Salamander Street, Tersias The Oracle and more. For a complete list check out his website at Gptaylor.info/.

I like this book and recommend it to anybody who has the time to read it. The First Escape is the beginning of the epic Dopple Ganger Chronicles. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series to see what happens next.

The Maze of Bones, by Rick Riordan and the first book in the 39 Clues series, is about "orphans" 14-year-old Amy and 11-year-old Dan Cahill in the hunt for the 39 clues.

They go to Paris and Philadelphia along with a few other places with Nellie. Starting in Philadelphia Amy, Dan and Nellie trace Ben Franklin's life to find the second clue.

The Amulet of Samarkand

The Amulet of Samarkand, by Jonathan Stroud, is the first book in The Bartimaeus Trilogy.

Bartimaeus, a five thousand year old djinni, and Nathaniel, a magician's apprentice alternate as the first person narrators for the story. After Simon Lovelace humiliates Nathaniel in public, Nathaniel starts plotting revenge on Lovelace. Summoning Bartimaeus is hard enough on its own but controlling him is almost impossible. When Bartimaeus is sent after Simon Lovelace's most prized possession Nathaniel  gets caught up in a whirlwind murder, theft and revenge.

This book takes place in London, England which is ruled by the powerful magicians who live there. Unlike Harry Potter, the commoners in the busy and populated city are aware of the wizards around them. In fact, they form a resistance to steal artifacts from the wizards which are occasionally used against them.

I would recommend this book to anyone, child or adult, who likes magic or fantasy. Stroud's series is packed with this and much more.

Diana and Cat have to be ready to leave from the party in the limo at 12:00 sharp instead of the traditional magic wearing off at 12:00.

Diana and Cat work at Cinderella Cleaners by the counter. Cat works at the register while Diana pushes the dirty clothes cart. Cinderella Cleaners was founded by Diana's grandfather and is run by her father. Because it is a family business, some people treat her differently than they do the rest. It is a salmon colored building with a big neon crown on the roof and a sign that says Have You Swiped Today??? hanging over a coffee machine by the employee entrance.
Characters

  • Diana Donato: main character and friend to Cat
  • Cat Portilla: friend to Diana and second main character
  • Elise: friend to Cat and Diana
  • Jess: Diana's best friend
  • Nelson: Cat's friend who works as a tailor

I liked Cinderella Cleaners: Change of a Dress because it was like the original yet modern at the same time. Though it doesn't have mice or a prince charming like the original it was still a good book. Cinderella Cleaners Change of a Dress is the beginning of the Cinderella Cleaners series. I recommend this book to people who like realistic fiction.
