Wonderland: Classic Fairytale with a Sci-Fi Spin

*I got this book from the author for free, this in no way affects my opinion of the book.*

by Robert McKay

  •  Book one of the Intergalactic Fairy Tales series
  • Science Fiction, Coming of Age
  • Includes violence and mild humor.
  • Published by McKay Manor August 20, 2015
  • 13-25 interest level

All Alice wants to be in life is a pirate. She wants to do what she wants, when she wants with no one to tell her otherwise. One night after sneaking out, Alice finds the perfect opportunity, a talking space ship. She
gets on, claiming it as her own, and rides to Wonderland. However, Wonderland isn't all smiles, it's mildly inappropriate people lose their head for disagreeing with the queen, and animals can talk, which isn't always a good thing. On her adventure, Alice makes new friends, some new enemies, and learns many valuable lessons. How far will Alice go for an adventure?

"Robert McKay is a clever nerd, who feels uncomfortable being called such. He believes in the Oxford comma, puns, and true love. Stories that wrap all of these things together, along with some outer space adventure, make his heart go pitter-patter and his days a whole lot brighter. When he’s not writing, he’s probably reading, but if he’s not doing either of those things, he may be found bowling, playing tabletop games, or researching how much it costs to rent a space shuttle."-Robert McKay

I believe that the story and all it's assets were very well written. My favorite part was Alice, as almost anyone can relate to her. Even if you haven't accidentally gone to another planet, you've probably gone against your parents just out of spite. Another thing I like is how everything seems realistic. The setting is well described, the characters are complete, and the story is unique. McKay provides a realistic story, including a main character with quirks and flaws.

Wonderland also features a unique twist on a classic story. Ever since I read Cinder I've loved fairy-tale retellings, and this one didn't disappoint. I recommend Wonderland to any fans of Cinder ages 13-25. Also, if you like space adventures, then this is the book for you. In the end, I loved everything about Wonderland and can't wait for Beauty and the Fleet, the next book in the Intergalactic Fairy Tales series.

*Unfortunately at the moment Amazon.com is the only place to purchase Wonderland.*

Tuck Everlasting

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt was first published in 1975 by Scholastic Inc. It is a a fantastic story because of the adventure, the mystery and the action. I would recommend this book to people who like fiction especially fantasy.

Winnie wants to live her own life and not always have her grandmother and mother  tell her what to do. She just wants to go outside of her fence and experience the world. When she goes outside the fence though, she gets more than she could ever imagine.

Winnie Foster is just an ordinary 11-year-old girl. At least she was, and then she met the Tucks. The Tucks aren't ordinary, at all. They are very special they have a secret. Winnie is the only other person who knows it.

Tuck Everlasting takes place in the Tuck's cottage in Treegap,Virginia. The Tuck's cottage is messy and disorderly, nothing like Winnie's neat tidy house that she's used to. In a way though that makes it more comfortable and Winnie likes that. There seems to be no rules and they eat in the living room .(No rules and eating in the living room I want to live with them!)

Natalie Babbit was born in Dayton Ohio on July 28, 1932. The first book she ever wrote was written in 1966. She wrote it with her husband and it was called The Forty-Ninth Magician. She currently lives in Providence, Rhode Island with her husband and three kids.

Pollyanna

I liked Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter because Pollyanna is always so happy and glad about everything. Even though it was published in 1913, Pollyanna is written like any other book you might pick up at a book store today. The language is a little out of date because of when it was written, but other than that it is pretty easy to understand. I recommend this book to people who like classics, realistic fiction, orphans or just family.

When Pollyanna's father dies she is sent to live with her strict Aunt Polly who only takes her in because she believes that it is her "duty". Aunt Polly believes that Pollyanna was an unnecessary child giving the fact that the world was already full enough. The small town where Pollyanna is sent to live is full of people who are quite unhappy, but Pollyanna finds a way to turn things around. How can one little girl change the whole town's mood? Read the book to find out.

Aunt Polly's house is located on a hill outside the town of Beldingsville, Virginia. The people of Beldingsville were always unhappy until Pollyanna came along and changed everyone's outlook on life. When Pollyanna gets into a terrible accident it effects the whole town. Everybody wants to see her to give her a message to make her happy about something in the horrible situation she is in.

Aunt Polly is bitter and uncaring in the beginning of the book. She doesn't care about anything but doing her duty. Throughout the book though, Pollyanna changes her attitude so that in the end she is kind, loving and caring to Pollyanna.

Eleanor H. Porter was born in Littletown, New Hampshire on December 19th, 1868. Porter married Jon L. Porter in 1892. She started a singing career at  the New England Conservatory of Music but by the early 1900s had given it up for writing. She published her first book Cross Currents in 1907 but her first big hit was Miss Billy, published in 1911 followed by Miss Billy's Decision in 1912. However it is Pollyanna and Pollyanna Grows Up that she is still remembered by today.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie is about Wendy Darling and Peter Pan and their adventures in Never Land. In the Mermaid Lagoon, Peter rescues Tiger Lilly by impersonating Captain Hook and telling Smee and other Pirates to undo her bonds and let her go. Because Peter helped Tiger Lilly, the redskins treat Peter as a Lord and protect the underground house by night.
If you like Disney's classic Peter Pan animation, you would love Barrie's Peter Pan because it has many more adventures and the ending leaves much more open to the imagination. But we won't give away the ending, you must read it to find out!

 Characters

  • Peter Pan: chief of the lost boys and main character
  • Wendy Darling: pretend mother to the lost boys and second protagonist
  • Captain Hook: captain of the pirate ship the Jolly Roger
  • Micheal: Wendy's brother whom she pretends is her baby
  • John: Wendy's second brother
  • Smee: second in charge on the Jolly Roger
  • Tinker Bell: Peter Pan's fairy
